"But the essential condition of everything you do, and not only in music, the touchstone, must be choice, love, passion. You do it because you consider that the marvelous adventure of being alive depends entirely on the atmosphere you yourself create, by your enthusiasm, your conviction, your understanding. But without a thorough technique, you cannot even express what you feel most intensely. And it it is here that the teacher comes in." - Nadia Boulanger
"You see, teaching is not just a dry business of scales and exercises; a great teacher is not just a tyrant who stands by you at the piano and raps your knuckles with a ruler when you make a mistake. Of course a great teacher may be severe with you, criticize you, discipline you, -- maybe even sometimes rap your knuckles with a ruler; but the main thing he or she must do for you is to light a spark in you, the spark that sets you on fire with enthusiasm for music, or for whatever you are studying. Because it’s only out of enthusiasm that curiosity comes; and you have to be curious about things in order to want to know about them. That’s where real knowledge comes from -- from the desire to know." - Leonard Bernstein
